Summary:
Team W6ZM decided to do a hunt at a location that hadn’t been used in quite a while. We envisioned Coronado as a place that would provide a beautiful beachfront location, amazing cityscape views and free parking. Well, that didn’t quite work out. What we thought would be a fun and relatively easy hunt quickly became a major challenge.
We watched the hunters using APRS on our iPad as they sped away from the starting point. Some hunters got tangled up in downtown San Diego, and two teams rode over the bridge quickly and we were sure they would find us in no time; however, both teams turned around and went back over the bridge. I thought it was best at this point to share a hint so I stated that there was a lot of sand at my location, but I’m pretty sure no one believed me...imagine that!
Time passed and the W6ZM team was getting cold and hungry so I let all hunters know that we were in Coronado. We followed along via APRS as all teams turned around, crossed the bridge, and eventually found us on the shore. Teams began sniffing out the small transmitters which had been strategically placed nearby. Some hunters got extra help from a four-year-old team member who likes to blurt out information. ?
We met up after the hunt at the nearby (3.2 mi) Mazara Trattoria which offered immediate seating, a huge selection of beers and wine, and friendly service. The staff was even kind enough to switch our group bill to separate meals. Even with all the whining, the staff kept a great attitude and did what it took to make us happy. ? I heard that some of the hunters couldn’t find the Moose Drool, I guess kind of like how they couldn’t locate the transmitters either....why? who knows. ?
Our official winner of the hunt was Gregg KI6RXX and his sidekick Tom K6VCR; 2nd place was Joe N6SZO and his partner Gregg W6BAF; followed by 3rd place Robert N9SCD and Joe KE6PHB.
A good time was had by all, I think.
