Unburden of what has been

W6ZM

Summary:

The ‘Unburdened by What Has Been’ hunt:

Bryan and I decided to go for a ride to find some hiding places for our transmitters. We came across the park off H Street by the water tower, and it seemed like it would be an easy hunt in a nice location.

The main transmitter was set up by a huge power pole with buzzing noise from the high-tension wires. This was a great place for a 5-watt or a 45-watt transmitter with a 13-element beam directed to the east, bouncing off the mountain.

In the meantime, we gathered up our four transmitters. The first one was Byonics MicroFox 50; a nice little transmitter that puts out 0.05mW to 50mW and it had a rechargeable LiPo battery to go along with it. The MicroFox 50 was hidden inside the guard rail. A broken wooden stick was taped to the antenna and it was pushed into the rail pipe. Above the MicroFox 50 was a fake transmitter box made from an Altoids box. It had an antenna and a magnet connected to it with nothing inside of it (sneaky!). The hunters continued to look everywhere around the railing, but not one person could locate it until someone (?) put their fingers in the hole and pulled the stick out to reveal the true transmitter which had the frequency for the three other transmitters. Gregg RXX found the stick first and Greg W6BAF found it two minutes later. Joe KE6PHB and Jerry W6VLF arrived soon after, next came Tim AJ6XP and Tim S, and at the last it was Bill KM6ORF and Casey KN4QK who came through and found the hidden stick rather quickly.

Bryan took the three MicroFoxes into the park that was across the street from where the MicroFox 50 was located. He planted the MicroFox 15 in some bushes along the walkway. This actually turned out to be rather difficult to find. This proved to be a challenging hunt, especially when the sun had set on some of the hunters which then necessitated flashlights.

At the end we found ourselves at El Patio for dinner. The food is some of the best Mexican dishes you can find and the company was great.
