Summary:

Sorry this took so long to get out, but we were up in Oceanside last week and I forgot my computer.

This was the third year that HAMTASTIC has been held on Fiesta Island. This year we had a good turn-out including current T-hunters as well as those participants that we see only so often.

Joe KE6PHB and I N6SZO arrived early and got the pop-up, tables and displays set up in orderly fashion, along with the doughnuts. The first T-hunt affiliate to show up was Ron KK6I and then Garry NA6NA made an appearance. Bill W6ZM also showed up to assist. Bill KM6ORF (‘the rat’) didn’t show up, but his brother Dan KI6KU (with Cora) parked next to us. Dan took advantage of his brother’s absence by claiming his share of the doughnut stash! Next, Mary KJ6ZIW showed up as a volunteer for the Sheriff’s office. Mary and her husband, Ken, have showed up on a few hunts and they have also generously allowed us to commandeer their cabin in the Laguna Mountains for an on-foot hunt and a county-wide hunt. Many of our photos were taken by her, so a big shout out to Mary!

Later on, we were joined by Brian WB2JCG who has t-hunted with us in the past. He reclaimed his sniffer that Robert N9SCD had borrowed for the JOTA. On a personal note, we also had two of my geology friends show up; Sue KM6HLY and Dave KJ6JRH. They recently obtained their ham licenses to use on our geology trips, and I think they were invited by Mary too.

There was a fairly good turn-out of T-hunt folks from the past and present. We were able to hand out a lot of the informational tri-folds too. We had seven people that located one or both of the hidden T’s we had planted across the road from our location. Four of our participants were Hams, one of whom was Charles KO6ANB of the El Cajon Club. Charles requires a wheelchair and we were so happy to provide an inclusive hunting area. In the past we’ve had hunters show up at various events and we always are welcoming because being a ham is for everyone! Another hunter was studying for his General exam and one lady just wanted to try hunting because her dad was a ham.

Overall, we believe it was a worthwhile event. We got to visit with friends and we also met some new people. This was also a great excuse to have doughnuts and do a little PR work during wonderful weather
